Description: This one-day training is an advanced skills practice course. The course will provide participants with an opportunity to practice using Motivational Interviewing (MI) to engage and support people living with or at risk of acquiring hepatitis C (HCV). This course will review Motivational Interviewing techniques, including how to recognize and reinforce change talk to address client ambivalence; explore client resistance related to HCV prevention and care; and practice strategies to manage client resistance to HCV prevention and care.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
· Recall strategies for providing key points of information about HCV to clients
· Describe the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
· Review the purpose of Motivational Interviewing.
· Review core communication skills to evoke and elicit change talk.
· Recognize change talk related to HCV prevention, care and treatment.
· Reinforce change talk related to HCV prevention, care and treatment.
· Practice MI-consistent information exchange (i.e., Elicit-Provide-Elicit) in response to individuals’ HCV concerns and questions about prevention, care and treatment.
· Practice using MI techniques and skills (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summary) to elicit and reinforce change talk surrounding HCV prevention, care and treatment.
