While the international research community may have been surprised by Mike Houghton's declination of the Gairdner Award, it was mainly due to the general consensus (specifically by the HCV research community) that his reasoning was not only folly, but less altruistic and more self-aggrandizing as it was yet another (sadly effective) attempt to eclipse the achievements of Drs. Alter and Bradley by redirecting the spotlight back to himself. Houghton is more a scientific capitalist than pioneer.
