Consumers should stop using OxyElite Pro weight-loss supplements for now, according to recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and reported by MedicalDaily.com. The two groups are investigating a possible link between the diet pills and 29 cases of non-viral hepatitis, two liver transplants and one death. So far, all cases prompting the national health advisory have occurred in Hawaii, but health officials believe that cases in other states may have been left unreported because providers did not know what to look for. According to the Hawaii Department of Health, 24 of the 29 recent hepatitis patients reported using OxyElite within two months of falling ill. Federal officials urge public health agencies, emergency rooms and health care providers across the country to be on the lookout for patients with liver problems who report using weight-loss or muscle-building supplements. The FDA also requests anyone with information about an illness that could be linked to the diet pills to report the situation on its website, or call 1.800.332.1088.
