Cured

I took Sovaldi and Ribavirin for 12 weeks. I have been cured of Hep C, which I had for probably 20 years. Never had any health issues with Hep C. But the meds nearly killed me. And over a year after finishing treatment, I still feel horrible every single day. I am completely wiped out with fatigue ALL the time. Have developed heart palpitations which are debilitating and now have arthritis in my back and constant pain in my muscles and joints. If I had it to do over again, I would NOT.

I was treated for Hep C with Epclusa (sofosbvrir and velpatasvir). I exhibited far more unpleasant side effects to continue on with the treatment, so after 28 pills I was deemed to be virus free. The side effects were far worse than the treatment with side effects that included insomnia, depression, sense of dread, lack of appetite (although I have gained weight since starting the treatment) BEWARE: What they will never tell you is that this medication decays every patients teeth.

Debbie - Is there any chance you can get a second opinion? Now that Epclusa has been out a little longer, you may have luck with appealing the denail. For help with that, I'd contact the Hep C Careline - www.hepatitisc.pafcareline.org 1-800-532-5274. Some other suggestions: Call Help4Hep and ask them for assistance: 877 Help 4 Hep (877 435 7443). Thank you for sharing your story I know we each have different circumstances, but I see similar themes as it pertains to Sovaldi/Ribo side effects. I am a healthy 52 yr female diagnosed last month. No symptoms, G2 mild scarring (F1-F2) no cirrhosis. Insurance just approved Sovaldi/Ribo 12 wks. Hesitant to start due to side effects and think Epclusa has less. Doc thinks Sov/Ribo is standard of care, Epclusa wont get approved, and side effects are the same. Do you have a point of view?

Hi Nicholas, It takes about a month after the side effects go away, and then gradually, you may notice improvements (although it takes time). When you are off ribavirin, you will likely not need cannabis, and that should help with the weed-induced brain fog - the hep C-induced brain fog takes time. As for what you can do right now, there is ginger as well as prescription zofran (ondansetron). Also, as soon as you can, fortify the process with good sleep, daily exercise, good diet, etc

2 weeks of sofosbuvir / ribivirin to do, been on interferon ribivirin three times before, one for six months, didn't work, one for a year, didn't work, another one for a year, that didn't work, now the fourth time almost there, but the mental fog and confusion has been a real battle. I have resorted to two grams of marijuana a day to kill that nausea and the depressive effects. That works marvelously but being illegal is very expensive. What else can I do, I do not want to take pain killers.

You didn't say what treatment you were on, so hard to answer. A great place to get answers is the Hep Forum - http://forums.hepmag.com
