I think bravery implies a choice. Getting up everyday is stoic and resourceful and you are right sometimes choosing to face the day is brave. Choosing to put yourself deliberately in the firing line seems incredibly brave to me. i somehow think that being who you will lessen the need for that thick skin. I can't imagine anyone listening feeling anything other than compassion.
