Well, they say that truth is often stranger than fiction and in this case it's true! Our magpies get very territorial in spring and they dive at passers by. There have been some studies that show they appear to recognise people who walk or ride the same route each day and don't swoop them, but I'm not sure if that's true. You can hear them as they come for you though - a swoosh as they cut through the air. Google magpie swooping hats and see for yourself. The ol cable tie fastened to the bike helmet is a perennial favourite.
