Connie, I think this overstates the risk of sexual transmission of hep C and the advice on avoiding it is just wrong. Long term studies on monogamous heterosexual couples have shown no sexual transmission. Because of this it is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection. Recent studies of hep C in semen show that it is present as a trace, but not in high enough concentration to cause transmission. There is definitive evidence sexual transmission of hep C between HIV+ gay men, but it is linked to group sex and other esoteric activities specifically. Condoms do not provide protection and in fact hep C can be transmitted on the outside of a condom. I know this because I was among the first cohort of patients to be identified with sexually transmitted hep C in London in 2002.
