Friday, December 1, marks the 29th annual World AIDS Day (WAD). First observed in 1988 by what is now called the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the day is a time for the world to come together in solidarity in the fight against the epidemic, to show support for those living with the virus and to remember those lost to it.

This year’s theme is “Increasing Impact Through Transparency, Accountability and Partnerships.” According to UNAIDS, 36.7 million people across the globe are living with HIV.
