Researchers have developed a new, highly accurate algorithm to predict who will benefit from intensive care unit treatment of end-stage liver disease. The investigators collected data on 354 people hospitalized with cirrhosis in centers in Belgium, Austria and Denmark.

Findings were presented at the 51st International Liver Congress in Barcelona.

The new algorithm is based on individuals’ level of disease severity, including their Child-Pugh Score, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and CLIF-SOFA score.

Based on this information, the researchers divided the individuals into two groups: those likely to benefit from and survive intensive care unit treatment and those unlikely to reap a benefit from and survive such treatment. The algorithm was 96 percent accurate in predicting the outcomes of the cases.
