There is no medical reason why you can’t be treated for hepatitis C infection. Many studies have shown that people who inject drugs have the same cure rates typically seen in those who don’t use drugs.

Although there is no medical reason prohibiting you from receiving hepatitis C treatment, some state Medicaid plans and private insurers won’t cover people who are actively using drugs. The same is true for some medical providers, although there is no scientific argument supporting their position. You may have to shop around for a provider who will treat you.

Note that if you are successfully cured, you can still be reinfected with hepatitis C. Safer injection techniques can reduce the risk of reinfection. The Harm Reduction Coalition provides information on safer injection.
