New data from the Global Burden of Disease Study estimates that about 1.4 million people die each year from hepatitis—nearly equivalent to the number of deaths annually attributed to HIV/AIDS worldwide. The study also said that more than a million of these deaths occur in the Asia-Pacific region, where three times as many people die from hep than HIV/AIDS and nine times more die from it than from malaria.
