The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of growing reports of new cases of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among individuals receiving dialysis, MedPage Today reports.

Publishing an announcement on its website, the health agency said it had received reports of 36 cases of acute, or very recent, hep C infections at 19 clinics in eight states. Hep C apparently transmitted between patients at nine of those clinics.

Investigation into the cause of these transmissions is ongoing.

The CDC has urged clinics providing dialysis to report all cases of hep C to the state or local health department, screen patients for the virus, assess their own observance of infection control standards, and seek solutions to any problems identified in such an assessment.
