I was born in the 1950s. My doctor says that I don’t need to get tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV) because I never did drugs or had a blood transfusion. Is that right?

I,too, was not a drug user nor received blood transfusions. I attribute my hep C infection to surgery I had in the mid-80s. I was hooked up to a device to make sure infection wouldnt set in. Looking back at my blood test history it was shortly after this surgery that my AST/ALT levels were slightly elevated. My hep doctor said it was a possibilty the machine they used was not properly sterilized at the hospital hence myhep C infection. I would do it for peace of mind.
