Blue Cross of California is illegally barring people with HIV/AIDS and other people with serious illnesses from getting their medications from their local pharmacies, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court and reported by San Diego 6 News. The insurance company, which does business as Anthem Blue Cross, requires people with the virus to get their prescription drugs from a mail order pharmacy. The advocacy group Consumer Watchdog, which filed the suit, claims the change discriminates under state civil rights law, adversely affects the health of people with HIV/AIDS who rely on local pharmacists to monitor drug interactions and violates the right to privacy because meds are delivered to homes and businesses.
