A nationwide initiative to help educate U.S. truck drivers about the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is revving up. It’s part of a new campaign from the Healthy Trucking Association, OraSure Technologies and AbbVie, Market Wired reports.

The campaign, “Truckers Rolling Against Hepatitis C,” will kick off this weekend, August 21 to 23, in Dallas at the Great American Trucking Show. It primarily aims to encourage testing among this at-risk population.

According to the latest stats from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hep C prevalence among truck drivers has reached 8.5 percent, which is more than five times the national average.

Continuing through the fall of 2014, the campaign will allow drivers to get tested with OraSure’s HCV Rapid Test, which provides accurate results for hep C antibodies within 20 minutes.

Today, it is estimated that 5.2 million people in the United States have been exposed to, or currently have, hepatitis C. Experts say nearly 75 percent do not know they are infected.
