Jefferson Starship Guitarist Slick Aguilar Needs a Liver Transplant
Longtime Jefferson Starship guitarist Mark "Slick" Aguilar
recently found out he has hepatitis C and that without a new liver he has a 50
percent chance of living for two more years.
The 58-year-old has played guitar with the band since 1992 and has started an
online campaign to help him raise funds to pay for the expected bills. At the
suggestion of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, who underwent a liver transplant
14 years ago, Aguilar is also moving to Florida, where the donor wait list is
shorter than in his current home state of New Jersey.
His health ordeal has inspired Aguilar to implore other people in his age group
to get checked for hepatitis C.
“Us baby boomers, you guys gotta get out
there and just go in for a blood test,” he told KZEL Radio. “Next time you go
see your doctor…let him draw some blood, because it is nothing compared to what
I’ve been through and what I’m soon to go through with a
liver transplant.”
